Iran re-elects Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been re-elected as president of Iran with a resounding victory, the electoral commission says. Therefore, we can expect Iran will continue its foreign policy along the same lines as in the past mandate. That means that, in my humble opinion, sooner or later they will become the ninth nuclear power joining the ranks of the US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan and Israel.

Considering the current economic and political climate in the US, I do not believe Obama’s Administration is in a position to confront Iran, whether by direct means (US forces being over stretched by its current engagements in the Iraqi and Afghanistani theaters), or indirect such as giving the green light to Israel to bomb Iranian nuclear installations. Despite all the official rhetoric between the West and Iran, it is highly probable that under the lines, middle level diplomatic talks are currently taking place between the US and Iran. Direct confrontation with Iran would undermine Obama’s soft foreign policy.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad re-election implies Iranian people do agree with their president standing, actions and rhetoric against the West. All they want as a country is respect from the international community. If chaotic Pakistan is a nuclear power,I do honestly believe that despite the West not wanting a new nuclear power to arise in the Middle East, Iran has the same rights to become nuclear, if not more, than Pakistan. It is a far more stable and developed country, with one of the highest levels of education and development in the Middle East, and that if respected their own vital and strategic space, could become a stabilizing factor in the region.
